Acronis True Image - good for HD clone.

January 18th, 2007, 8:28

A while ago I bought a larger faster notebook hard drive for my laptop. I didn't want to rebuild so have been hunting around for a suitable cloning tool.

The challenges I faced were that some tools did not support USB (I put the new drive in a USB 2.0 caddy for the purposes of trying to clone).

I looked at CopyR but my Russian's not great so I didn't get far and I'm not sure it would have worked on the USB drive.

Anyway, my tip is that Acronis True Image will do the job. In fact, I did this initial job using the 15 day trial version. It was pretty fast as well (only a 14 GB drive cloning to a 40 GB drive). Not sure exactly how long as I hit the PS2 whilst it was busy - but fast enough.

I'm going to have a play with the rest of the software now (backup and such). 100 MB download and install was a bit slow. I also needed to temporarily disbale Zonealarm so that I could register the trial.

But looks like a good tool and may be useful for some (I know that this is probably very old news for most of you :) )
