Can any SW image a disc while ignoring a bad *physical* head

February 25th, 2007, 16:37

I have a bad head (one of the four) on a Seagate ST3160021A.

I'd like to pull off all of the good data before attempting a repair (or throwing it away...). All of the software I've looked at including MHDD deals in logical 256/16/bignum Cyl/Head/Sector values, not the actual physical drive layout.

I know one head is bad, but every package I've tried takes a very long time to decide on each sector. Can anything do a disk image from certain physical heads only, so I can tell it to just enter blanks in the image for the stuff I know is dead?

MHDD when it scans goes through the bad bits quite quickly, because it uses Sector Verify first. But when you use ATOF to image the disc it tries and tries just like everything else :-(

Any help gratefully received, thanks
