So .... Let's see .... What DID really happen is that some Russian guys did manage to capture the traffic from WDMarvel to and from server and did create an openserver version that one can run on the localhost to "emulate" the WDMarvel server. WDMarvel will then connect to it instead of the on-line server and will work as full version. Maye the Russian guys were simpply pissed off because they got their licenses deactivated ? At any rate it doesn't matter. WDMarvel author did decide to move to SSL so that the connections can't be sniffed (yeahhh right .... as it would solve anything) and decided to deactivate versions that don'rt use SSL....
So the guys who have the "pirated" server that already got all that they needed from the server will have WDMarvel for free and the ones like me that were using older versions can't use those versions anymore...
Not to mention that what they are trying to do is impossible ... It's like protecting DVDs ... Because the "player" needs to have the key to read the disk the key can be extracted ...
Just because WDMarvel is using encryption the keys have to be on the software and the software needs to know how to decrypt and on worst case one can allways sniff the SATA/IDE interface .... so pirates will still have their way and legal users will be stuck with either upgrading or moving to pirated version (that should be considererd fair use anyway since I did already paid for lifetime if i can't use the real lifetime and i use soething else instead .... you get the picture).... Not clever, not nice ... in particular because :
1) My main machine for data recovery is using XP with other tools that have locked license to it like SeDiv and
2) I don't want to disable Windows security to install *dlls from the WDMarvel team to "patch" AES on windows (with chances of killing other licenses) and I did like the fact that 3.x would load very fast unlike 4.x that verify a lot more stuff for copy protection .... I wasn't even using 4.x with the PRO/PLUS version that I did had and kept the 3.x one as was way more fast to load and open/close if needed, etc ...
So yes, I'm pissed and if they can do this they can as well tomorrow decide that someone cracked the newer version so they have to issue a new one that only runs on win 11 and kill all the others .... or they can decide that they don't like me for what i post and kill my license (that i did pay) ...
I did support Ukrain from day one (on regards to the war) but this doesn't feel right .... many Russians most likely are againt the war as well and by now have their licenses de-activated ... but i can still understand to some extent that they have done that .... buy disable licenses of people that doesn't have anything to do with that (I'm in Portugal-Europe) just because someone already cloned the WDMarvel server .... Ok ... they already have the server working and a pirated tool ... so the sollution is disable the license of those who paid for what ? To force them to move to pirated version ?
