I have always imaged directly to a Donor with Data Extractor and never to file so I cannot help you 
Can you restore the .img to a hard drive through Data Extractor then use the Stellar Phoenix?

I will try to send it to a wiped donor drive and see what happens. Seems like there would be a market for a data recovery program which services BSD. If you google all you see down the page is Stellar Phoenix.
