Tools for hard drive diagnostics, repair, and data recovery

Hey everyone,
I'm interested in the power management features in HDDScan, and I noticed that all of my hard drives have different options enabled / disabled, or have different values as to how aggressive these power management features should be.
I know the newer hard drives have built-in power saving features (like my Hitachi 7K1000.B), but:
1) Is it safe to turn on / off APM and ACM and adjust the sliders for my various hard drives? I'm not going to touch the HDD spinup / spindown, as the computer acts mainly as a server computer.
2) Will HDDScan implement the power saving features differently, or use the hard drive's built-in power management features?

I was wondering the same thing. Do those settings only apply while HDDScan is running?
