I'm starting out as a self employed computer engineer, and at the moment am quite fine at virus removals spyware etc and speeding up the computer as well as general stuff.

I want to be able to offer data recovery, such as being able to recover files have been overwritten.
I dont want to go into the specialist market where it costs people a fortune to have data recovered, but I want to be able to recover more than I would by using simple programs such as recuva

What I need is

• something that is pretty simple to use, it can recover to external memory stick? is this possible or does it have to be to an external hard drive of the same capacity (or bigger) as the one installed?
• Must be able to recover files from Raid drives/arrays
• Reasonably cheap,I'm only starting up, with no capital and I dont have thousands of £'s to spend on software
• Ideally it has to be portable, i.e. I can use it from a memory stick on any computer I have want to inspect, or I can install it from the memory stick or even better be able to be installed and run ffrom a bootable cd such as vistape using winbuilder to build it.

Any ideas or suggestions please?

Whichever programme you decide on and there are many don't even think of installing it on the customer computer. You want to recover files not overwrite them!

Yes you could run the likes of recuva from a memory stick but the next step forward is to set up a desktop pc back at base, install an OS and then your recovery application. Mount the drive/s to be searched for files, partitions, etc etc and create images if required and scan the images for files. You won't be doing this out in the field but back at base as it could take many hours or even days to do this even on a good working drive.

Its only a 6 month of a FREE of pay work to become a "Newbee" in data recovery., Plus you get to say how much data recovery pro has to charge for his work.

Heh, If I lived close enough I would probably do it. I have been working with computers since 1990. I never had any issue I couldnt overcome. Not only did I overcome it but I usually found an easier way of doing it. But trying to find a solution for my hard drive problem led me to looking into this stuff and I can honestly say its the most difficult subject I have ever encountered. I think thats proabably because there really is no easy way of doing it.

I think of data recovery in similar light to auto mechanics. Most mechanics are able to figure out and fix pretty much anything wrong with a car. However, when it comes to a dead alternator, they either replace it or they send it to a specialist to rebuild.

You may want to look into becomeing a partner with a bigger data recovery company. What will you do if your client's hard drive has a physical problem and needs having a look at in a clean room?

You could start your work in some big DR company, for example OnCrap Data recovery (read OnTrack).

Set up a lap top, only offer small recovery of lost data, start off small and build you knowledge and then add on as you need find a good shop near you to help out in harder job that you can not handle

I work in a repair shop, I'd also like to find some data recovery software. If a customer tells me they have important data on their pc I'll refer them to someone who does data recovery.

However sometimes they just have music or pictures that they want saved, so I'd like to be able to do that before I reinstall the OS.
Usually I find I can hook up the drive as a slave, and just recently
I learned how to use the Knoppix rescue disc.

You can of course download Knoppix for free on the net.

Try RStudio works great
