Jonny, the script you are using is for older WDC chipset drives, and your drive has a Marvell chipset.

I've taken up this project again. I still have the two WD800JD's.

I've made a floppy diskette, added the USB driver to the config.sys file, booted to the floppy, the HD mounted in an external USB caddy and is recognized by MHDD as

Quote:
6. HDD: Generic External (NOT READY)

I use this script:

Quote:
; rm modul id 42
reset
waitnbsy
regs = $57 $44 $43 $00 $00 $a0 $8a
waitnbsy
regs = $00 $02 $00 $00 $0F $E0 $21
waitnbsy
checkdrq
sectorsto = 42.bin
; End.

It fails at
Quote:
Line 1: RESET
Please switch to IDE mode before using this function.

The desktop computer I am using is a Dell 2350. I upgraded the BIOS from A0 to the most-recent A2, and there are no BIOS commands that set anything to "IDE mode", and I cannot find anything in MHDD that allows you do switch to an IDE Mode either.

What do I do next?

Hi,
I can suggest a different approach.
You might be able to input a valid master password using the Dell service tag from your 2350. Dell support also offer this service at a cost providing you can supply proof of ownership. The master password will reset both bios and hdd passwords if the hdd password had been originally set by the Dell bios security function.
I'm not going to describe this in any great detail on this forum but Google would be your friend.

Sorry but forget what I suggested earlier as your 2350 is not the original pc the drives were removed from. Anyway perhaps the original model does not have the hard drive security option to set a password in this manner.
