 Post subject: corrupt excel docment

family member tried to recovery there tax information as its needs to be in this week.
they deleted the file to begin with.
and recovered it with a program.

they sent me the file in excel 2003 and it opens up

but its got corrupted lettering all over


does anyone know how to rebuild the file system

as i tried some programs and they dont work.

Probably the file was partially overwritten.

What are you after? A working file or the data contained within?
If there is any data to be had you would be able to see it if you open the file in notepad.

im trying to get the data contained.

if i can get working file that be great.

but when the files are opened up it contains corrupt information

any ideas as i tried opening in notepad etc

I bet they installed the recovery program on the same drive they deleted the file from.

yep you are correct they did install it on the same drive.
the data is gone forever.
they have to now go throu all there taxes again.

I know one solution regarding the repairing the file

To manually repair a file

1. On the File menu, click Open.
2. In the Open dialog box, select the file you want to open, and click the arrow next to the Open button.
3. Click Open and Repair, and then choose which method you want to use to recover your workbook.

remember that all office applications create a backup file while your working on the main file

i suggest to look @ the temp folder of the user
example:

MS-word files temp names starts with ~Wxxxx just rename it to .doc and thats it
i don`t remember the excel temp name chk it

about fixing your file try to use the Kernel for Excel Recovery

i tried it the best

yep checked there and nothing at all :(

the hard drive gone back now as they had to file there tax returns right away
