somehow hitachi's own diagnostic tool won't run on their hard drive. so i ran seatools dos version and it passes the hard drive with no errors.
i realize that seatools is a good tester, but doesn't really scrutinize the hard drive in the way i feel good about. i scanned with MHDD and it says this in the right hand column:

3ms--3623593
10ms--196386
50ms--10451
150ms--44
<500ms--4
>500ms--6

i also received warnings at the lower right hand corner:

302165565
314532810
317405895
318910650
318917790
821472555

does this data say that the hard drive is faulty? could someone who is knowledgeable about MHDD please answer this question?

thanks.

ISTM that there are 6 very weak groups of sectors, mostly around the 150GB mark, that require several retries. If they become problematic, then you could possibly exclude them by placing them inside a small, empty partition.

fzabkar,

it's good to know i have that option. unfortunately, i keep getting a grub error 17 with this hard drive. i think there is an error on a critical area of the hard drive (mbr, boot files, or grub). i keep getting error 17's. it's now happened four times. i will reinstall linux with a program called 'remastersys' and not long later, another error 17. this is a relatively new hard drive, so i think i will return it for replacement.
thanks.

I recommend you rescan the drive and see if the same sectors are reported with warnings.

RMA the HDD it is better for you on this one. If your install gives this error not too long after installing your OS then it is better to change out your HDD. Happens.

Icoughey,

"I recommend you rescan the drive and see if the same sectors are reported with warnings."
same sectors are reported with warnings? it didn't appear that this info was available. how can i obtain/investigate this?

poehere,

that's probably the way i'm going to go anyway. but a chance to learn how to better use and understand this tool would be beneficial to me. the tool won't show me anything on a good hard drive, only a bad one.

thanks for the replies.
