Acessing iPod 5G with MHDD (Magic Boot Disk v2.0)

I can't get it to work.

This should just work like a normal ATA drive using the ZIF to IDE convertor.. Dont use usb- it does not work correctly.

What do you want to do anyway? If you want to scan for bad sectors - use the windwos version - HDDScan for winD0\/\/s .. and use the verify feature- this will work with USB enclosure.

ZIF to IDE convertor

What is ZIF? Isn't it a connector between iPod's HDD and iPod's motherboard?

Dont use usb- it does not work correctly.

Well, it should work according to specification. So it's just a case of proper troubleshooting (I hope).

Not just scan. I want to get rid of them! And I heard MHDD is the best choice (remap feature).

Hello. Did you actually take the hard drive out of the ipod?

It should look like this picture i attached

the white stripe on the top is a ZIF connector (ZERO INSERTION FORCE) or sometimes LIF (LOW INSERTION FORCE)

This uses a thin cabled that connect to the MB of the ipod yes.. but it is actaully the same interface as a PATA hard drive with the 40pins. so buy this (wait up to 10 days or pay some more and get it on Allegro! )

Connect it direct to your pc onto the ata port and MHDD will pick it up like a normal hdd. (using it over USB has limited functions)


MHDD does not fix bad sectors - it can be used as a tool to fix bad sectors , if the drive supports it. But to directly fix the bad sectors with MHDD you will need allot more knowledge than scan with remap. Now i have not tested it with this G5 drive and i doubt it will. Remapping feature occurs in the internal program of the HDD; if its disabled or missing it wont help you.

Rememeber that MHDD can destroy your data and you could possibly render your hard drive unusable using a "script" or custom commands. Be careful what commands or scripts you might use.

I have about 30 of these drives that are waiting to be fixed (well i am waiting for proper equipment to fix it) -
First do a scan and see how many bad sectors you have. If there are allot- jsut sell it on ebay and get a new one.

Note that I don't care about the data since I already zero filled the drive with DMDE tool.

Hi.

I suggest just using the commands in the help of mhdd. I have attached an alternative manual for you made by some other guy.All rights belong to him.

In mhdd you can access parts of the drive that you normally should not.(so you can get scripts for a particular model of drive that does one job and wont work on another) These commands are not listed on the help and only professionals know how to use it. They are all different for each model of drive and if you write one bad sector to the wrong place the drive wont start any more.

I do not use mhdd to do this kind of repairs. Please browse the forum and look at the different discussions on tools, hardware and techniques used.

The rest is up to your imagination.

If you would have bet on that- then you would have won but that's only part of the story

There is nothing more I can help you with on this thread. Once you get the converter you going to need to dig deeper for more information.

Finally, I got it!

I've done a surface scan with MHDD. Here's the results:

I've also read SMART attributes but failed to save the results. How can I save the log to a floppy so I don't need to write everything down?

AMNF - Adress mark not found

Both these values are not great news. What you have to do now is ERASE the drive and scan it again. IF ANMF does not disappear then you the hard drive is failing quick.

What you have to do now is ERASE the drive

I've already zero-filled it under Windows (DMDE) so I wonder if I should try again?

Well the surface is degrading then. If you already erased it and it gives those AMNF then there is no software that will help you fix that.

You can keep on experimenting if you want.

You write down the locations of the UNC and AMNF and tell mhdd to scan repeat the same place over and over and over with REMAP on- until it does not show the error and try the next.(The Hard drive might relocate the sector to a spare one-but its already done that 403 times and these spare sectors are limited) Like i say- this is experimentation only and hdd repairing you will never do that procedure.

If it was 1 or 2 bads then it would be worth trying.

There is not much more i can recommend to you that is feasible.

Unfortunately, I didn't preserve the scan results but I'll rescan it later. I understand that these are saved to mhdd.log so I just need to copy it to floppy under DOS?

So you're telling me to loop scan with remap on single sectors, right? Threre are 173 of them which is quite much. Is it like some sectors tend to somehow refuse to relocate and therefore need to be scaned in the loop?

Not really refused. Maybe it just cant relocate any more sectors(because the smart log already shows it relocated some-there is a limit for this). Even you did manage to fix all 173 of them i is possible new ones will develop shortly after because the surface is degrading.

Give it a try if you are bored. Best option to get a new one.
