this could be a normal scenario with all pc users ,while copying large files windows stops suddenly giving some error and you dont know how much data is left.
I need to know any professional tool with windows shell interface to copy open /locked files. I tried Teracopy / Supercopy /richcopy but found them buggy & other issues with win7.
if someone knows any better alternate please suggest me.
thanks

You cant just copy open files. This is a feature implemented way back in windows 98 already.

The only question is why are you copying large amounts of data that is in use by something else?

There is a programs to kill locked files threads allowing you to copy/move/delete/edit them-
http://www.malwarebytes.org/fileassassin.php

But still- what are you copying?

Hi ppumkin thanks for replying my post.
After completing data recovery ,we need to give data back to customer .This could be html files ( long file names) & some corrupt 0kb files. Typically some of the files in windows profiles also cannot be copied even if profile is of another pc .
I get most of the jobs done with some freeware softwares available ,but dont mind paying for a profesional solution with customised features like windows shell extension .
If there is better solution to address this issue ,this post could be helpful for everyone .

I use Ycopy. It cannot copy locked files, but it just omits the locked files and continues with the other files.
Does a good job.

I was going to suggest Ycopy. It's a great piece of software, to copy data. It can copy anything.

there are better ways
enumerates all open handles to the file then either injecting closehandle(), or freelibrary() based on the file type into the owner thread. if you just want to read use windows backupread(), which can read regardless of file security or sharing mode or read sectors base on file FATS.

lol if this is a recovery case the only thing that I could think of is that he had done either the recovery in place over the actual data or something similar.

chipsang - I think you are mixing concepts here my friend.

Locked files in windows means something completely different than files with owner permissions.
If an HDD is in another PC the files cannot be locked. They have OWNER PERMISSIONS.

Simples - to remove and copy data- no need for software- windows can do it.

Plus so can HIRENS MINI XP - Such a feature called as RESET NTFS PERMISSIONS- Viola my friend 1second to a few minutes and you can "recover" all the data you need..

Good Luck

Perisa - Usually if files are locked state- that means that they are used by its own operating system- or threads by the opering system that is trying to access the data.

If i do recoveries i make sure everything is READ ONLY and no such locks or accidetnal data change will occur.

Or just simply take ownership.

well, i got this total copy http://www.ranvik.net/totalcopy/
can be used for the following issues:

if you copy files/folders and stops on the middle and want to continue/resume without starting from scratch again use this tool its free

i use it for large amount of files/folders, you will notice that it will stop for sec. but its calculating and will show u the time/total files to be copied and so.

give it a shot

There are a few utilities that use the Volume Shadow Copy service of Windows XP and higher. Two that I found, both are free, with a quick Google search are:

Hobocopy
http://alt.pluralsight.com/wiki/default ... oCopy.html

Shadow Copy by Runtime
http://www.runtime.org/shadow-copy.htm

Volume Shadow Copy is a service that is used by most backup programs to allow them to backup those same locked file you are trying to copy.

Chipsang,

I know you have indicated that you have resolved the issue. I would like to point out that there IS a solution that will copy locked files. Windows XP has a facility called Volume Shadow Service that is used by backup programs so that a full backup really is ALL files.

I found two programs that use this facility to copy locked files:

Hobocopy
http://alt.pluralsight.com/wiki/default ... oCopy.html

Runtime Software Shadow Copy
http://www.runtime.org/shadow-copy.htm

A Google search quickly found these two programs. I am sure there are more. One thing that makes these two stand out is that they are FREE. The program Shadow Copy is by Runtime Software, the makers of GetDataBack that I'm sure many have used to recover files from logical file system damage. Hobocopy is an open source tool.
