MHDD Erase Delays ?

January 8th, 2011, 15:53

Hello.

First time user of MHDD. Decided to use after seeing two warnings in SMART Result.
These were:

(C4) Reallocated Event Count: 100/100/0/13/Warning
(C5) Current Pending Sector : 100/100/0/11/Warning

Apparently these are not worst issues to have from SMART Report.

Drive:
Samsung - SpinPoint HD103UJ F1 (1TB)

First thing i did was diagnose using samsungs estool.
Everything pass except deep surface scan

error: lba 2485514
error: lba 2487466
error: lba 2511866
error: lba 2520162
error: lba 2522114
error: lba 443878789
error: lba 443880594
error: lba 443884204

Bad sectors.

Followed up with Low Level Format using same tool which resulted in no errors according to estool.

SMART Results changed to:

(C4) Reallocated Event Count: 99/99/0/24/Warning (bold representing change)
(C5) Current Pending Sector : 100/100/0/0/ OK

At this point i learn about MHDD Program.

MHDD Scan Results:

3ms....: 7427018
10ms.... 230208
50ms.... 3608
150ms... 5
500ms... 36
>500ms.. 0

And No Bad Blocks

warning 484267950
484277385
749319795
749321325
749325150
751474035

Heres is where i am uncertain how to proceed. Based on my results with Change in SMART values and delays reported in WHDD
and the fact that its a samsung drive (apparently you cant remap them because of plist?) is it worth proceeding beyond
the erase i just did? Also is my drive actually safe to continue using?

Also The FAQ reports that you should
Q: How can I fix delays on my HDD (red and brown blocks in MHDD)?
A: Use ERASE command in MHDD (it will erase the entire hard drive though :)), then run scan+erase delays ON, then scan+remap ON.
but it also says that
Q: Can I remap red or brown box?
A: No.

If thats the case why not just erase > scan with erase delays on and forgo scan with remap?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Remap function is obsolete on newer/current drives, IMO

If your drive still has errors or delays after a full erase then time to get a new one

Thanks for the reply drc.
Tbh i did a full erase but have not rescanned with MHDD. I plan to tonight. If delays are still shown (brown and green),
is there no point to try "scan+erase delays"? Would that function not make a difference even if remapping dont
work with samsungs? Do scan erase+delay not work effectively without Scan+remaps?

I want to keep using the drive since there little point selling, but at the same time, id like to help it get better :D

I don't see a lot of point in "erase delays" after you have already erased the entire thing, unless you want to just try erasing bad/weak spots multiple times
