Tools for hard drive diagnostics, repair, and data recovery

Hello-
I have a 1TB drive in physically perfect condition and am working with a DDed copy of the drive.
The drive has 3 partitions, with the third EXT3 volume containing all the data. R-Studio MAC says the blocks are 4KB and provides offset etc. However, R-Studio MAC does not appear to successfully recover DNG format - it does show a slew of CR2 files, which the preview application will not open. I have downloaded demo versions of a myriad of other recovery programs and none seem to succeed with full scan of EXT3 for DNG format.
I want to recover the DNG files because of the additional metadata included, not just the CR2 or TIFF or whatever photo happens to be inside the file.
Any suggestions?
Thanks in advance,

What happened to the drive to begin with?

It was part of a accidentally reformatted RAID 1. The other drive has some bad sectors so I am working with this drive.

RAID 1 is a mirror...no formatting involved, unless you mean it was being initialized by a RAID controller.

Right, that's why I am able to work with only this one drive. This issue is getting any of the software to recognize the .dng files properly. We are not just hoping to find the raw files inside the dngs, we want the dngs because of the additional metadata.
Anyone have any technical hints or specific information about the dng signatures?

Best bet would be to examine some good ones and see what you find
