This doesn't seem right... Ultra ATA CRC Error Rate - 262

I have 2 Hitachi Ultrastar 500GB drives and both drives have really high numbers on this. Is this bad?

Bad cables maybe?

It could be a cable issue, although two drives with the same problem would make me want to look elsewhere for an explanation.

Can you reduce the interface speed to 1.5Gbps, for troubleshooting purposes?

It might be, but you haven't given enough background info for others to make a reasonable guess as to cause.

What is the "link" between these 2 disks and how they are (or were) being used - same customer / system / something else?

What is the reported problem, or were you looking at the SMART data proactively, without any problem being reported?

Do you have the systems where these disks are currently being used, or do you just have the disks?

You've mentioned the number 262 in your choice of thread title - but it would be better for you to supply the full SMART data (inc raw values) from both disks, for readers to review.

Finally, you also mentioned "Ultra ATA CRC Error Rate" in the thread title. Attribute 199 is not a rate, and this fact usually helps with diagnosis (if you decide to continue with diagnosis!).
