@jcfm: A few comments below...

When a disk starts to have bad (unreadable) sectors, it may not be worth trying to fix it (and attempts to fix may not be successful, if there is an underlying fault).

Perhaps this was not successful, because the drive is more faulty than you thought?

Although I have not seen "official" support for that program here, again that message suggests that the disk is reporting errors to the commands sent by llf tool.

You can try using any "zero fill" or overwriting tool (Seagate Seatools, WD DLG, MHDD etc etc), if you want to try to make the disk reallocate any currently-recognised unreadable sectors. Better would be to perform a full read scan followed by a zero fill, to try to find all unreadable sectors. However, if you see errors from these programs too, then that probably means the drive really is faulty.

Is all this effort really worth doing for a 40GB disk drive, which could just be reaching the end of its life and hence becoming unreliable? Do you really want to store data on this disk, if it is unreliable? It's your data so it's your choice :)

Boas

Não consegues ligar o disco internamente a um PC? O MHDD não funciona com USB.

"Hi

Can't you connect the HD directly to a PC? MHDD doesn't work with USB."

@jcfm:

Thanks to pclab :) - I forgot that your disk was USB-attached, so I should not have suggested using MHDD (unless you could direct-attach the disk, outside the USB enclosure). In theory MHDD can be used for USB disks, using a DOS USB driver, but this is not always successful.

Yes. As I said before, I recommend first doing a full read scan (so that the disk has a chance to detect all currently-unreadable sectors) and then do a zero fill (so that the detected unreadable sectors will then be tested by the disk and, if needed, reallocated). WD DLG is quite easy to use.

If you are happy to use an unreliable disk, then it's your choice. :)

"It's good to do a full scan and see if it has alot of bad sectors. If so, the best thing is to bin the drive, because you can have problems with it."
