Hi
i have a 2Tb internal sata3 hdd [WD green] for backups only
i connected it with a "sata to usb" connecter into my laptop's usb [laptop has vista]
i initialized it with the windows Disk Management tool
i copied about 500Gb into it
i connected it with sata into a home pc [win7] AND i got a freaky messege that i need to format it
i was afraid that i lost all my data so i connected it back to my laptop's usb & [i think] that all the data is ok
SO - why can't i see it with a home pc?

this is more likely as it was setup for vista and not windows 7

what happens when you plug the drive back in on the vista one
does it pick up ok.

had the same issue where i had a drive which was converted for windows 7
but windows xp did not see the drive and said there was a error

plugged it back into windows 7 and the drive was seen

I've got an idea about a possible cause for this (unrelated to Windows version).

However, the easiest way to test this theory would require you to lose the 500GB of data already on that 2TB drive. (There are other ways, but they would require careful use of a hex editor, and that would take a longer time.)

Can you copy that 500GB of data on the external WD drive, onto another backup device in order to carry out some troubleshooting (which you should assume will lose that existing data on the WD drive)?

I see 3 ways to solve the problem:

1. Simple & save would be to have a 2nd external drive, set it up with Win7,
and connect it parallel to the 500GB hdd on your laptop. Then copy all data
to the new drive.
- or you could create a 1:1 clone with any (freeware)tool on the market.

2. Check the hdd partition status in the Windows disk management console
and perhaps correct it in Win7 - but be aware that this could lead to data
loss.

3. I would try with PTD (Partition Doctor) software in Win7 environment to
get a status.

OK, so I can't help you, if you are unable to do troubleshooting.

FYI, I think that trying any suggested "fixes" on that drive, without having another copy of that data, is a bad idea.

god damn!!!
i don't belive it! :|
i managed to find someone with a lot of spare space in his hdd. i connected my 2Tb sata3 hdd with the "sata to usb" adapter into his usb connector & copied all the files to his hdd.
after that i connected the drive into his internal sata3 connector, formated the drive... & copied back all the data.

NOW..................
from his internal sata3 i can read the drive
from my home pc i can read the drive with the internal sata3 connector
BUT
from the "sata to usb" i can't read the drive at all!!! i can't backup things from my laptop into the drive!!! now when i'm connecting it with the adapter i get "format the drive"!!! :?

OK, that behaviour fits with what I expected - in fact that was one of the tests I was going to suggest (before you said you could not move the data elsewhere, in order to do any tests :) ).

Unfortunately, as I understand your comments, you are now unable to do another test, as your data is now back on the drive, and it is not clear if your other copy still exists or not. :(

When you are able to temporarily move your data onto another drive (again), so that tests can be done on this drive, then you can reply back to this thread and (if I'm still monitoring the board), I'll suggest some tests (which ware not safe for the data on the drive). Until you are able to do further tests, it's not worth me spending time explaining tests, if you can't do them!

thanks

Although I am reasonably confident that my hypothesis explains your problem, for a couple of reasons I want to see specific test results (as I mentioned earlier), before I spend time explaining it.
