This has been an interesting read, as i also am considering moving up a level for data recovery. I use o&o, easy recovery and pandora to do basic data recovery and Ive been outsourcing, to a friend with a ninja f and a company with a clean room when he cant get the data back, my friend charges me £50 and i in turn charge 100. But i think this is quite a high charge really. This is why i now want to get my own duplicator / recovery machine.

Is the Ninja f too out of date now as ive seen forums going back to 2006? and im also worried about buying something for £2000+ and finding out that it wont recover info from SSD drives (also recovery from the SSDs in Macbook airs interests me?

One has to understand drive architecture, operation and consequently failures. Then understand what tools are for what.

Do you do data recovery yourself?

If your looking to pay £2000+ you might aswell go all out and get a deepspar. Moving from basic data recovery to a higher level of data recovery is not so simple. There is much more to data recovery than software applications.

SSD Data recovery? This is a long long way off basic data recovery, at this stage I wouldn't think too much in to it. A disk imager for SSD is not going to help with it.

Get your own imager, do what you can inhouse, but until you are confident, competent and more experienced in non-software aspects of DR, you should continue to outsource. It is very important to know your limits, or else you run the risk of rendering someones important information unrecoverable forever - it is easily done.
