Tools for hard drive diagnostics, repair, and data recovery

I'd love to run MHDD on a Mac. The Macs apparently don't have a BIOS so even when I do get MHDD running, I cannot input anything from the keyboard.
Does anyone know any tricks to make this work? Like something that could be loaded in front of MHDD that would get a keyboard working?
Short of that, does anyone know of any OS X apps that perform similar functionality? I'd love to not only see the SMART data, but also know how long it takes to read each sector.

Perhaps under boot camp or via parallels?
