Depending on what is actually wrong with the drive the answer to your question is yes there is tools out there to repair your drive and give access to the data area.

You first need to understand the problem and why your drive will freeze when you try to access this one. The more you try the more damage you can do to your drive.

You can buy a tool which is not cheap and comes from Salvation Data it is called HDD Doctor for Maxtor. This is a very good tool and does a good job to repair maxtor drives. But on the down side you have to know what you are doing in order to use this tool. The tools comes with a manual and if you can follow the book you might and I say only might be able to do this one. I would not suggest that you run out and buy a tool to do this one with.

You can take this to a DR company and if the problem is not so bad this might not cost too much. First off your drive has to diagnosed to what the problem is and second your drive has to be cloned and no longer worked with. A good tool to clone with starts around 4000 dollars. Now I think you would be able to use a cloning tool to clone your drive providing it is possible for your drive to be cloned and there is no problem in the SA that need to be repaired first.

From what you have said it makes it hard to determine the exact problem you have on your drive.

If you can see the data then system area is probably ok and you should not mess with it. I would guess damaged sectors or even a bad head, but its impossible to know for sure.

You can try to run a surface test on it with MHDD to verify any read errors, this will also give a better idea of the problem. But until you know the problem, you should stop trying to get data from it.

If there are many reading errors then stability will be a problem for you to attempt recovery, you would probably need specialist hardware to reach the data. At this point it would be better for you to get it looked at by a professional.

Try to make the clone of it before you scan with MHDD
