Error reading SMART (7200.11/7200.12)

This is the 2nd time I have a disk that gives "Error reading SMART" via the sata interface and makes the drive Busy
but internally can read the smart data ok with N5
The previous one was a 7200.12 ST3100052AS that I had been messing around with
viewtopic.php?f=13&t=27731
The latest one is a 7200.11? ST2000DM001
And it happens to be in a server with an array controller (but not in a hw array) that seems to check the smart status
and so cant see the drive
The data etc on this drive is ok and accessable through a simple SATA controller
and I could image it off to a new disk
But just wondered if any way to get the drive to return its SMART data ok (via sata) and no get stuck busy
Thanks
