On this case study I'm going to use my HRT card and the DRE component to image a very old 422 MB MAXTOR 7420AV drive !

http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=1168

Drive Details :

Form: 3.5″
Capacity: 422 MB
Heads: 3
Seek time / track: 14.0 / 3.0 ms
Controller: IDE / ATA2 FAST/ENHA
Cache/Buffer: 32 KB SEGMENTED
Data transfer rate: 3.500 MB/S
Recording method: RLL 1/7

We start by executing HRT-DRE and provide a name for the new project.

Now we chose to save the project as a image file instead of cloning to another drive, and we check to see if the DRE can pick up the drive correctly.

As I'm going to attempt to image the entire drive and as I expect that the drive is still on a good condition despite of the years it have, I'm going to just click on Mark All + Start to mark all the sectors of the drive for copy/imaging and start doing so !

We now wait a few moments while the imaging/cloning component of HRT attempts to copy all the sectors of this old drive to an image file so that we can later process it to get our data back. We can check the progress of the image and determine if we are getting bad sectors, skipped sectors or if the drive is getting copied with success :

On my drive all went well and I get a perfect image of the drive without a single bad sector. A message is displayed saying that the image/copy is finished and I can review the "Map" in order to determine if I want to attempt to copy the bad sectors again, or what action should I take, like taking more time and more retries on bad sectors, issue soft-resets, etc ... As this drive imaged fine I'm going to skip that step :)

Finally now that I have my image of the drive I would just have to mount it on a logic recovery software like R-Studio or use the HRT-DRE file extractor option to copy my data out of the old drive to a safe place !

Since I've decided to dedicate my research intro recovering from very old drives on this case study I've demonstrated how I would clone/image your old failing drive in order to recover your data with success !

Hope that you have enjoyed my presentation.

Best Regards.
