why not winhex? and maybe you should give some requirements then, because if winhex is no good, then I am not sure if you actually want a good one, a free one or what. help us to help you.

I use HxD for a lot of things, and winhex if I need any of its features.

You said you wanted it for ROM research. Winhex has a lot of things built in like shifting left or right, inverting, comparing (HxD has a good file compare too).. in Winhex you can convert to different binary formats, UUencode, intel/Motorola etc.

More importantly if you don't know what you are looking at, no hex editor is going to suit.
