Please check the following links :
Testing hard disks with some confidence :Executing a "Cosmetic Fix" on drives with Bad Sectors :Assigning slow sectors to the P-List :and for further study :
Translator, Defect Lists and Bad Sectors :Understanding translator "shifts" :If you want to test 2.5 IDE drives you should get a 3.5 to 2.5 adaptor or IDE cable to plug the drives directly to your test machine/desktop unless you plan to test them directly on the laptop.

If you want to pocket out some real money and if you manage to find someone still selling OLD USED units of HRT 3.0 or 5.0 UDMA you can do BATCH TESTING as i've just finish explaining here :
http://www.hddoracle.com/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=1441This is one of the BEST WAYS to conduct un-attended testing (all you have to do is to switch the drives that you want to test for another one).
