Playing with Pcimag's great explanation trying to make it more data simulating:
fill a glass with 75% black marbles (data) and 25% white marbles (operating system) somewhat randomly mixed together. Empty the glass at least 25% to make room for os (white marbles) you are going to put in. The black marbles in the mix you took out represent lost data.
