I'm launching a new service to repair JPEG files that are damaged by bad sectors. You can read up on it here: https://www.data-medics.com/jpeg-jpg-re ... -recovery/

And no, it's not just using some crap software like Stellar or EaseUS which we all know doesn't work.

If anyone would like to see a sample of what I can do, please post a JPEG image below that has bad sectors and I'll repair/re-post it for you.

Looks good, but why does a bad sector look like this instead of all zeros?

Code:

Maybe because it has been read without ECC, such as the final pass on DDI for example?

For the examples I posted I just selected some random sections of 512 bytes in WinHex to delete. I didn't bother to check if I was aligning it to an actual sector boundry. I've done the process on several images that actually were affected by bad sectors, but I wasn't going to post any client data online, so I had to just simulate the damage on a few pictures I took myself.

Perhaps in that spot, I started to zero fill and didn't actually highlight a full 512.

In any event, if you'd like a real life test just post an image you have or that your damaged yourself.

Edit: Actually the reason it's like that is you're not looking at the code of the original image. My site has a Wordpress plugin that compresses images that are higher resolution than they need to be. You're looking at a reduced resolution copy of the original, thus the smaller than 512 block of zeros.

Spildit's resized JPEG doesn't have any blocks of zeros, nor do any of your JPEGs that I resize in my image editing software.

Those aren't "sectors". To simulate bad sectors, you need to replace 512-byte or 4096-byte blocks of data with zeros on a sector boundary.

Yes, I will need the original damaged jpeg, not a converted one. Once it's converted I can't do anything to fix the stream.

Can you zip it and post again?

R-click the image and select "saved linked content as" or whatever your browser supports.

The color is a little off, probably because the first bad sector was so near to the top of the picture there was very little to compare the color with. It's close enough that most people wouldn't notice the repaired spots at a glance.

That'll be $10 please. JK

This might be a very bad idea in some ways ...

Let's say that you have a client with a bad drive. You recover the data by PC-3000 / DE / Head Swap, whatever. You charge the client for exampl $1000 USD.

Now the client checks the data and he figures out that he have 1000 images that are very important to him/her that are damaged. This might happen because media/platter damage that you didn't notice.

Now what will you do ? Recover/restore the 1000 images by hand because the client already paid ? Or you offer the image restoration service at $10 for each image ? Wouldn't the client fell that it's sort of a scam ? Like having an initial payment and then another payment to recover the lost images ?

Unless you clear state when doing "normal" data recovery cases that in case of damaged images the price have to be paid acording to the images the client wants to recover ?

On that thought, my paperwork that my customers sign explains about bad sectors and that the service doesn't include any file repair or restoration services. However if I plan on pushing such service onto customers, I'm sure I'll need to make it even more clear up front. Perhaps I'll even offer a few as part of the recovery cost, but if they want more it'll be extra. As it is now we'll do the occasional PST repair and whatnot, just to make the customer happy and avoid them returning asking for that help.

I've been doing some experimenting with "progressive scan" JPEGs. These consist of several interlaced scans.

In some cases I can truncate the last 80% of the file without visibly affecting the image, at least to my eyes. The extent to which I can do this depends on the amount of detail in the image.

In the following example I truncate the last quarter of the test file:

Attachment:
test_Spildit_original_resized_progressive.jpg
test_Spildit_original_resized_progressive.jpg [ 234.54 KiB | Viewed 20526 times ]

Attachment:

test_Spildit_original_resized_progressive_trunc_2C810.jpg [ 178.02 KiB | Viewed 20526 times ]

In the next example the file is truncated by half:

Attachment:
CDC_progressive.JPG
CDC_progressive.JPG [ 96.61 KiB | Viewed 20526 times ]

Attachment:
CDC_progressive_trunc_B970.JPG
CDC_progressive_trunc_B970.JPG [ 46.36 KiB | Viewed 20526 times ]

Here the file is truncated to 20% of its size

Attachment:
JMicron_progressive.jpg
JMicron_progressive.jpg [ 251.2 KiB | Viewed 20526 times ]

Attachment:
JMicron_progressive_trunc_BEE0.jpg
JMicron_progressive_trunc_BEE0.jpg [ 47.72 KiB | Viewed 20526 times ]

The point at which successive scans begin and end looks like the following:

Code:
Offset(h) 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 0A 0B 0C 0D 0E 0F

0000BEA0  D6 13 FD 5D DE 2D 55 5F DA A7 F2 AF FF C4 00 4A

Quote:
JPEG Repair Shop allows you to repair corrupt JPEG files by manipulating the internal structure of the JPEG file. This makes it possible to repair corrupt files, which would be impossible to fix in a normal image editor.

http://anderspedersen.net/jpegrepair/

How does it work?

The image data of JPEG is divided into small rectangular areas called MCUs (Minimum Coded Unit) which are encoded together. Because of the way JPEG files are compressed an error in an MCU is likely to be propagated to the remaining image data, either displacing the image or changing the colors. JPEG Repair Shop allows you to delete and insert MCUs and to automatically fix color errors.

And yet .. It's hard to beat this freeware with these simpler cases. Jpeg Repair Shop is excellent provided not too much corruption (tends to crash a lot) and resolution not too high (tends to get really slow) https://youtu.be/ZI4KNexopiw
