Tools for hard drive diagnostics, repair, and data recovery

Hi guy)
A few times I saw people who regularly home-checked their HDDs via MHDD/Victoria/HDAT2 and others "just to make sure".
Sure, everything is working fine, but some 'wise people in the Internet' strongly recommended to do it once in a couple of months, you know...
Ok, let it be, they bought it, yet the point is HOW they advised doing it:
- Run the software and only then plug-in the HDD -- why?
- First of all, disable AAM -- why?
- You need four (4) separate checks on the top-bottom-left-right HDD side -- why not front-back then?
- Erase slow sectors prior Remapping -- for the working drive with OS/data?
And many similar stuff for better enjoyment or something!
So, what other 'wise people' think about such and if there's a guide how-NOT-to kill your HDD?
TY

Once again, another Internet-expert stated that only PIO backward (reversed) checking counts.
After a question why not 'butterfly', he proudly replied: "Because it can destroy the HDD!"
Did you know?
