How to access the good disk after use HDD raw copy tool

June 2nd, 2016, 20:29

I just used a new Buffallo 4TB disk to copy my crashed Segate 3T disk by HDD raw copy tool, but I can not find the new Buffallo disk from Windows manager after the copy is 100% finished. (both are USB interface)

Before I start the copy, I can access the Buffallo disk from Windows, but it disappeared when the copy is started. The process for HDD raw copy: Choose the source disk (Segate) -> choose the target disk (Buffallo) -> the warning (all the data in the target device will be covered) -> copy start -> 100% copy

I expected I could recover and access all the files in the Buffallo copied from Segate, however, I can not see the Buffallo disk from Windows any more! What wrong with me?

Any advise?

Thanks very much

Kevin

Reboot your PC / Reattach the disk and then go to Disk Management and take a look what Windows says about your new disk.

It could be found in the Disk manager, but nothing shown in :Computer"

I wonder if the problem may be due to 4KB sector sizes.

Can you show us the Partitions windows for both drives in DMDE (freeware disc editor)?

Yes, the partition seems a problem, why? is it possible to recover? (see the attached file 3T disk.jpeg & 4T disk.jpeg)

Neither drive appears to have a partition table in sector 0.

If you double-click the Seagate Expansion NTFS volume on each drive, can you see your file/folder tree? If so, and if you then expand the Root and recover one of your larger files to another drive, does this test file open correctly?

If the answer is yes, then r-click the Seagate Expansion NTFS volume on your clone and select Insert Partition (Undelete). You may need to choose Edit -> Edit Mode and then Drive -> Apply Changes. Then safely remove the drive and reconnect it. This will ensure that Windows re-examines the file system.

The file in disk could be recovered and open correctly, and I insert the partitioned (MBR)to the Segate clone disk as your advice. Windows could show the disk (F), however, it showed the disk needs to be formatted once I tried to access the disk F, do I miss any process when I recovered it?

Thanks

Could you show us the contents of sectors 0 and 2048?

Use Mode -> Hexadecimal/Text

BTW, please do NOT format the drive.

I don't understand. You are showing us the original "crashed" 3TB drive. I understood that the 4TB drive was the clone.

Anyway, you appear to have edited the partition table on the 3TB drive. Can you see the 3TB drive in My Computer now or are both drives giving "format" errors?

BTW you showed us LBA 7, not sector 0.

sorry for mistake. here is the 4T information and 3T sector 0 updat. 3T are format error,

4T disk could be accessed from Windows "computer", but it become a Segate disk (not Baffallo)and shown the capacity is only 2.72T. How to extend the capacity to original 4T?

Thanks very much

So the file system on the 4TB clone is OK, but the file system on the original drive is not??? That seems strange. Maybe the Seagate drive has bad sectors in critical file system areas. I would examine the drive's SMART report with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo.

To extend the capacity of the 4TB drive, you would normally go into Disk Management and create one or more additional partitions in the unallocated 1TB space. However, I believe that earlier versions of Windows could not handle 4Kn drives. To circumvent this problem, Seagate supplies DiscWizard (an OEM version of Acronis True Image).

To view and change the volume label, you could use the VOL and LABEL commands from a CMD prompt.

Thanks to Fzabker's guide! It is a wonderful experience to repair my files today, I will try to check the root cause for the 3T format error if I can.

Unfortunately, I bought 3 pcs 3T Segate HDD for backup, and they all crashed at the same week, 3 crashed at the same time. only one can be read from the repaired tools and the other two even can not be found by the tools we used for disk/files repair. I am wondering if I need to ask for help to the professional disk recovery vendors or any tools can help me to try it?

any advice? thanks

Show us the SMART reports:

Look for reallocated, pending or uncorrectable sectors.

The other 2 Segate devices are not detectable by computer or any SW tool, no any new device shown when it is plugged into the computer from USB!

Do the HDDs still spin up in the enclosures?

Did you overvolt them with the wrong adapter?

Can you remove the drives from their enclosures and connect them directly to a SATA port on your motherboard?

Yes, they are still in the enclosure,

I am trying to break the housing, not easy, no screw outside!
