| Post subject: | Will the LLF render a drive unusable? |
I am not a hardware guru; but I recently performed a LLF - checking the "perform quick wipe... " option. It appeared to run successfully based on info below; but the drive seems unusable now. The drive is a Seagate ST375033 with Firmware SD15 as seen below. I've posted the current device details first. Then the results of the LLF I did which "completed". (and, amazingly it just did it again - after failing a number of attempts previously, which prompted this post!!??) So now I guess my REAL question has to be "does this drive 'look' usable?" ================== Current date and time: 23-Jun-16 1:27:58 PM HDD Low Level Format Tool 4.40; http://hddguru.com Device details for [8] ST375033 0AS SD15 [750.15 GB] (1465149168 512-byte sectors) Model: ST3750330AS Firmware Revision: SD15 Serial Number: 9QK03KAL PHYSICAL PARAMETERS: LBA mode is supported LBA-48 mode is supported Sectors available with LBA commands: 268,435,455 Sectors available with LBA48 commands: 1,465,149,168 Full device capacity: 750,156,374,016 bytes SECURITY: Security features is supported The device is currently not locked FEATURES: SMART is supported HPA (Host-protected area) is supported AAM (Automatic acoustic management) is not supported Streaming feature set is not supported QUEUING: Command Queuing is supported by the device Maximum Queue Depth: 32 ===================================== 22-Jun-16 2:56:50 PM * * * * * WARNING!!! * * * * * 22-Jun-16 2:56:50 PM DURING THE LOW LEVEL FORMAT PROCESS 22-Jun-16 2:56:50 PM ALL DATA WILL BE FULLY and IRREVERSIBLY ERASED! 22-Jun-16 3:16:25 PM 22-Jun-16 3:16:25 PM ================================================= 22-Jun-16 3:16:25 PM HDD Low Level Format Tool 4.40; http://hddguru.com 22-Jun-16 3:16:25 PM Low level format: [1] ST375033 0AS SD15 [750.15 GB] (1465149168 512-byte sectors) 22-Jun-16 3:16:25 PM Device capacity: 1,465,149,168 sectors 22-Jun-16 3:16:25 PM Locking device... 22-Jun-16 3:16:25 PM Formatting... 22-Jun-16 3:16:54 PM Average speed: 0.4 MB/s 22-Jun-16 3:16:54 PM Low-level format is complete. 22-Jun-16 3:17:02 PM 22-Jun-16 3:17:02 PM Remember to create new partitions. ======================================= Just now ... 23-Jun-16 1:26:43 PM * * * * * WARNING!!! * * * * * 23-Jun-16 1:26:43 PM DURING THE LOW LEVEL FORMAT PROCESS 23-Jun-16 1:26:43 PM ALL DATA WILL BE FULLY and IRREVERSIBLY ERASED! 23-Jun-16 1:31:15 PM 23-Jun-16 1:31:15 PM ================================================= 23-Jun-16 1:31:15 PM HDD Low Level Format Tool 4.40; http://hddguru.com 23-Jun-16 1:31:15 PM Low level format: [8] ST375033 0AS SD15 [750.15 GB] (1465149168 512-byte sectors) 23-Jun-16 1:31:15 PM Device capacity: 1,465,149,168 sectors 23-Jun-16 1:31:15 PM Locking device... 23-Jun-16 1:31:15 PM Formatting... 23-Jun-16 1:31:53 PM Average speed: 0.3 MB/s 23-Jun-16 1:31:53 PM Low-level format is complete. 23-Jun-16 1:31:53 PM 23-Jun-16 1:31:53 PM Remember to create new partitions. =================================================================== Current SMART data Current date and time: 23-Jun-16 1:42:43 PM HDD Low Level Format Tool 4.40; http://hddguru.com SMART data for [8] ST375033 0AS SD15 [750.15 GB] (1465149168 512-byte sectors) Attribute Current Worst Raw Note ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1 01 Read error rate 98 85 197747537 3 03 Spin up time 93 93 0 4 04 Number of spin-up times 100 100 116 5 05 Reallocated sectors count 100 100 2046 7 07 Seek error rate 65 60 197699721893 9 09 Power-on time 57 57 37720 10 0A Spin-up retries 100 100 0 12 0C Power Cycles 100 100 83 184 B8 End to End Error 100 100 0 187 BB Reported Uncorrectable 100 100 0 188 BC Command Time Out 100 98 785991008440 189 BD High Fly Writes 28 28 72 190 BE Airflow Temperature 60 55 673054760 194 C2 HDA Temperature 40 45 40 (40 degrees) 195 C3 Hardware ECC recovered 49 13 197747537 197 C5 Current pending sectors 100 100 1 198 C6 Offline scan UNC sectors 100 100 1 199 C7 Ultra ATA CRC Error Rate 200 200 0 Why this is scattered all over I do not know. The number of bad sectors is far too high. I would not trust this drive any longer.
I'm surprised that your drive lasted 37720 hours. That's quite a good run for a model that is known to be unreliable. I'm curious to know the secret of its long life. What sort of environment was it running in? |

The drive was in a Linux machine which was pretty heavily used. We have had good luck with WD RE3 level drives but this machine was built before we started doing that and I was actually surprised to see it fail. Of course, the reasons you stated don't make it surprising. There simply was no "warning." The good news: it was RAIDed so the data is all recovered. Cheers, Tim |
