Low level access in vb is not that easy to do

You can use all the win32 API's in VB. Likely do anything you can in any other language, add ASM etc. Once you get your head around VB it isn't that bad. A lot of people that use VB do so because they code 'backwards'. Meaning they create the GUI how they like it, then code the functionality.
