Hello everyone,

I bought some disks from two different ressellers, everythings works fine, but I have some question regarding those disks:

Code:
Manuf.       Model               Serial                Interface       Capacity  Type  Firmware
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  1) HGST         HUH721212ALE601     [REMOVE]              SATA            12000 GB  HDD   LEGNX3Q0
        HGST Firmware: LEOHX3Q0
  2) HGST         HUH721212ALE601     [REMOVE]              SATA            12000 GB  HDD   LEGNX3Q0
        HGST Firmware: LEOHX3Q0
  3) HGST         HUH721212ALE601     [REMOVE]              SATA            12000 GB  HDD   LEGNX3Q0
        HGST Firmware: LEOHX3Q0
  4) HGST         HUH721212ALE601     [REMOVE]              SATA            12000 GB  HDD   LEGNX3Q0
        HGST Firmware: LEOHX3Q0
  5) HGST         HUH721212ALE601     [REMOVE]              SATA            12000 GB  HDD   LEGNX3Q0
        HGST Firmware: LEOHX3Q0
  6) HGST         HUH721212ALE604     [REMOVE]              SATA            12000 GB  HDD   LEGNW9G0
        HGST Firmware: LEGNW9G0
  7) HGST         HUH721212ALE604     [REMOVE]              SATA            12000 GB  HDD   LEGNW9G0
        HGST Firmware: LEGNW9G0
  8) HGST         HUH721212ALE604     [REMOVE]              SATA            12000 GB  HDD   LEGNW9G0
        HGST Firmware: LEGNW9G0

I'm wondering:
- Why firmware is different between "Firmware" column and the HGST Firmware statement for the HUH721212ALE601 model ? (GN mean Generic and OH mean OEM ?)
Does this mean previous user flashed them with a generic firmware ?

- HUH721212ALE604 firmware seems to be up to date, but I see a firmware update for HUH721212ALE601 => LEGNX9U0
Can I update those disks with this firmware ?

- HUH721212ALE601 are SED on the paper: data-sheet-ultrastar-dc-hc520
But, hdparm seems report that the disk is not actually encrypting data (same result for all five disks):
Code:
hdparm -I /dev/sda

Security:
Master password revision code = 65534
                supported
        not     enabled
        not     locked
        not     frozen
        not     expired: security count
                supported: enhanced erase

What do you think ?

- Helium Level is different between 601 et 604:
All 601 report

Quote:
22 Helium_Level 0x0023 100 100 025 Pre-fail Always - 100

604 report:

Quote:
22 Helium_Level 0x0023 100 100 025 Pre-fail Always - 6553700

Hope some hdd guru like napalm_atx or E123 could help me to figure out with all my questions

Thank you !

6553700 = 0x00640064 -> 0x0064 / 0x0064 -> 100 / 100

The raw value looks more logical in hexadecimal. We can see that it consists of two 16-bit words, each reflecting a helium level of 100%.

Can you dump the drive's 512-byte Identify Device data block with a tool such as CrystalDiskInfo?

Hum, I see, make sense, that's maybe related to the old firmware ?

I can't use CDI, those disks are in a headless Linux server :/

This is the standards document I'm using. I couldn't find a direct download. Sorry.

Information technology - ATA Command Set - 4 (ACS-4) - Revision 18, August 4, 2017
https://www.scribd.com/document/4724678 ... et-4-1-pdf

Identify Device words 59, 89, 90 appear to be the pertinent ones.

AFAICT, the time required for and Enhanced SECURITY ERASE UNIT command in the 601 model is 1 minute. Bit 13 of word #59 is set to 1, so this means that the CRYPTO SCRAMBLE EXT command is supported.

The 604 model supports neither command.

Therefore it seems that 601 is indeed a SED, and 604 is not.

Code:
Word 89 O B F Time required for a Normal Erase mode SECURITY ERASE UNIT command (see 7.13.6.43)

Code:
Word 90 O B F Time required for an Enhanced Erase mode SECURITY ERASE UNIT command (see 7.13.6.44)

Code:
Word 59 M See 7.13.6.21

B F 15 The BLOCK ERASE EXT command is supported (see 7.34.2)
B F 14 The OVERWRITE EXT command is supported (see 7.34.4)
B F 13 The CRYPTO SCRAMBLE EXT command is supported (see 7.34.3)
B F 12 The Sanitize feature set is supported (see 4.18)
B F 11 1 = The commands allowed during a sanitize operation are as specified by this standard (see 4.18.6)
0 = The commands allowed during a sanitize operation are as specified by ACS-2

B F 10 The SANITIZE ANTIFREEZE LOCK EXT command is supported (see 7.34.5)
     9 Reserved
X  8:0 Obsolete

Therefore it seems that 601 is indeed a SED, and 604 is not.

Yes, but hdparm report that option is not enable:

Quote:
hdparm -I /dev/sda

Security:
Master password revision code = 65534
supported
not enabled
not locked
not frozen
not expired: security count
supported: enhanced erase

I mean, I know 601 is SED (I know it from P/N), but i'm wondering how it could be not enable ?

The security feature set refers to the ATA password. It's not related to SED -- they are two different things. "Not enabled" means that no password has been set.
