**HDD PCB Replacement: When Is a Matching Board Not Enough?**

Replacing a hard drive PCB may seem straightforward when a donor board has the same part number and revision. In practice, however, board compatibility can involve more than matching the visible markings.

Depending on the drive family, the original PCB may contain ROM data or drive-specific adaptive information that is required for correct initialization. A donor board may look identical but still not be directly interchangeable with the original drive.

A few questions for those working with HDD recovery:

- How do you verify donor PCB compatibility beyond the board number and revision?
- On which drive families is transferring or reconstructing the original ROM particularly important?
- When the original ROM is damaged or unreadable, what factors determine whether reconstruction is feasible?
- Have you encountered cases where an apparently compatible donor board failed because of drive-specific configuration data?

Of course, the exact procedure depends on the manufacturer, drive family and firmware architecture. A PCB fault should also be confirmed before assuming that board replacement alone will solve the problem.

I would be interested in hearing about other technicians' experiences, particularly with older and newer drive families and differences in their ROM implementations.
