I see this on an almost weekly basis at Seagate's and WD's forums.

The usual result is a shorted 12V TVS diode. Should cost the end user $0 to fix.

Send him or her to HDD Guru and I'll show them how.

I've heard a lot of stories, but never thought I would see one in my DR experience.

Person called to find out if we could recover data from platters he saved in a plastic bag, which came from a WD drive that he took apart. I told him not to come in, because damage on those platters would be beyond reasonable/recoverable. I realized later that I could have recorded his appearance and whole story on our surveillance cameras.

Back in the day, I had a customer that disassembled a 10megger. This thing was huge at 1'x1'x10". They put the platters into a Shugart 5.25 mechanism as a last ditch effort. The mechanism clamped down and proceeded to spin them at 300rpm. But no data could be read. They bought the 5.25 floppy drive and everything into the shop. And in the drive was what appeared to be a floppy. But in the floppy housing itself was one of the platters.

WD800BB drive starts to knock. Client wants to look inside. But he can not remove the head screw. So he takes a drill and drills it out. Now he calls me and asks me to recover his data. When he finds out how much he said please keep the drive for yourself. Another client wanted to move his ROM to another board. He read about hot air solder station but did not have one. So he had a hot air gun for paint. He used this one instead. Needless to say the entire board was melted from the heat and his ROM is gone.
