The disapearing/reappering drive usually caused by pcb failure, like MCU restart or freezed.

A freezer spray: D may be of help to make sure about a failing pcb component
or If you want to find hot failing unit or that from which point there is disconnection
while there is a good chance to temprarily fix the disconnection.

In this case i have seen sometimes the drive "forget" to park the heads and the heads was stucked on the platters....
Additionally re-initialisation just like normal initialisation DOES write attempts into the SA.

Yes at least update the smart log file of stop/start count.

And you can't be sure about the drive will no restart DURING the SA write attempts....

Also true, so in addition to freezer spray :D for mcu disabling the smart might give it more change to finish cloning.
so if time between restart is long enough to pass the init. the risk is lower.

This is why more dangerous.
You can play with these type of drives, but if someting wents wrong, the prices is doubled or tripled or more worse...

Totally agree.
The only thing is that the whole logic of right/wrong in data recovery in based on a very high value of
Data on failing drive and fail to have adaptive logic for possible rescue of lower value data .where original
logic doesn’t apply
Or impossible to reach.
I think even a partial success in these cases is something to consider because the high number of potential costumers

Where in US are you located?

I may be able to fix this one up for you, if it turns out to be only PCB $350 is workable.

What is the exact model of the drive, and I will see if I have at least a similar one around and make sure I can access the ROM on the series before you send it (I am 95% sure I can on WD)

you can PM me if you are interested.
