Understood, but that's no excuse for ridicule, arrogance, greed, snobbery, etc. And nobody should be expected to tolerate the condescending and patronising attitudes that are standard fare for this forum.

On the contrary, my inbox tells me that I'll be sorely missed. Someone needs to defend the minnows from the sharks.

More to the point, I don't think that DIY instructions are really the intent of the forum. And Franc enjoys trying to ridicule some of the regulars because they hurt his feelings when he first signed up.

Ridicule is the standard that has been set by the regulars. I'm just following suit. If you're prepared to dish it out, then don't be surprised when you get some in return.

On the contrary, my usual style, as is evidenced by my participation in other forums, involves patience and understanding.

But yes, you're right, my initiation into this forum was extremely unpleasant, by none other than BlackST himself.

One thread that sticks in my craw was where I offered a plausible explanation for a strange resistance reading. Some "guru" was comparing two PCBs by buzzing them with a multimeter, and was surprised when a shock sensor measured 500 ohms. Apparently, nobody understood that a DMM's diode test turns on PN junctions (PN = diode). :o

Instead of gratitude for my friendly suggestion, including a drawing, I was abused by BlackST, who then disappeared into a pow-wow with his mate, no doubt to discover the power supply short that I had predicted.

So, yes, my feelings were indeed hurt.

Disappeared? We have something else to do : recover data and do R&D for a living. Feel abused? Report or ask admin. Make ANOTHER poll. Live with it or do what you want but don't involve other people that are not thinking of you. Period.

On that occasion I gave you and your colleague well intentioned help. However, instead of gratitude and a followup confirmation of my diagnosis, all I got was abuse. Now you are insisting that your behaviour was acceptable. By any moral standard, that makes you an unredeemable sociopath.

The data recovery "community" is very insular. No, its not all about egalitarian sharing of every bit of information. That was something that I had to come to terms with when I first started getting involved. I don't think that getting all offended is going to help anyone get anywhere. IMO if one is trying to fit in with a new clique of people one has to learn that particular clique's rules and standards and then act accordingly.

In my experience, the only time anyone is out-and-out rude is when new people bust onto the scene and shout "WHY AREN'T YOU TELLING ME EVERYTHING THE INTERNET IS FOR FREEDOM OF INFORMATION I'VE BEEN WORKING ON COMPUTERS FOR YEARS SO OF COURSE I CAN DO PLATTER EXCHANGES IN FOUR-PLATTER DRIVES WITH SPACERS" instead of lurking the damn forums for a few weeks and reading and absorbing all of the already-existing information so as to be able to make a sensible post about their issue.

In the even better case, you get someone like Pixels who identifies an issue and then does some (gasp) actual work to deal with it instead of just making twenty-three whiny threads about why nobody will help him. I don't see anyone being rude to him.

The industry as a whole is also plagued by perhaps-less-than-scrupulous types who claim to perform professional data recovery and then either blatantly scam their customers or just ruin the drives from lack of knowledge, all the while charging some unsuspecting sucker for the privilege. This leads to a distinct distaste for people who show up and say "HEY TELL ME HOW TO FIX THESE EIGHTEEN DIFFERENT COMPLETELY BASIC PROBLEMS PLEASE", when it is obvious that even a LITTLE bit of work on the search function or even Google would answer most if not all of the questions.

I'm not advocating being rude, but dammit if you can't even be bothered to use your brain or type your question into Google first then no, I am not going to fix your problems for free and I don't think anyone else should either.

I have a sore tooth today. MY friend had a bad tooth once, and was charged $$$ by his dentist. All the dentist did was drill a little, then apply a filling.

My question is this: the internet is designed for the sole purpose of sharing information. how hard can it be to fix my own tooth? Can anyone point me in the direction of a hand drill strong enough to drill through my tooth?

Also, I cannot find good filling, I was thinking polycell?

If all goes wrong, I am sure I can find a dentist to sort this out for $50. How hard can it be?

What you should do is to refrain from abusing people, especially those who try to help you, such as I did on that introductory occasion.

If you and your mates think that your abuse was acceptable in the above instance, then you really are a despicable bunch. I'll have more to say on this in my own special thread.

BTW, if anyone needs a definitive picture of this group, just ask yourself, what kind of people would ridicule a person for trying to help others, without any ulterior motive, and with no expectation of personal gain?

If that's not the definition of a sociopath, then what is?

fzabkar - here goes:

Profile of the Sociopath

Glibness and Superficial Charm

Manipulative and Conning
They never recognize the rights of others and see their self-serving behaviors as permissible. They appear to be charming, yet are covertly hostile and domineering, seeing their victim as merely an instrument to be used. They may dominate and humiliate their victims.

Grandiose Sense of Self
Feels entitled to certain things as "their right."

Pathological Lying
Has no problem lying coolly and easily and it is almost impossible for them to be truthful on a consistent basis. Can create, and get caught up in, a complex belief about their own powers and abilities. Extremely convincing and even able to pass lie detector tests.

Lack of Remorse, Shame or Guilt
A deep seated rage, which is split off and repressed, is at their core. Does not see others around them as people, but only as targets and opportunities. Instead of friends, they have victims and accomplices who end up as victims. The end always justifies the means and they let nothing stand in their way.

Shallow Emotions
When they show what seems to be warmth, joy, love and compassion it is more feigned than experienced and serves an ulterior motive. Outraged by insignificant matters, yet remaining unmoved and cold by what would upset a normal person. Since they are not genuine, neither are their promises.

Incapacity for Love

Need for Stimulation
Living on the edge. Verbal outbursts and physical punishments are normal. Promiscuity and gambling are common.

Callousness/Lack of Empathy
Unable to empathize with the pain of their victims, having only contempt for others' feelings of distress and readily taking advantage of them.

Poor Behavioral Controls/Impulsive Nature
Rage and abuse, alternating with small expressions of love and approval produce an addictive cycle for abuser and abused, as well as creating hopelessness in the victim. Believe they are all-powerful, all-knowing, entitled to every wish, no sense of personal boundaries, no concern for their impact on others.

Early Behavior Problems/Juvenile Delinquency
Usually has a history of behavioral and academic difficulties, yet "gets by" by conning others. Problems in making and keeping friends; aberrant behaviors such as cruelty to people or animals, stealing, etc.

Irresponsibility/Unreliability
Not concerned about wrecking others' lives and dreams. Oblivious or indifferent to the devastation they cause. Does not accept blame themselves, but blames others, even for acts they obviously committed.

Promiscuous Sexual Behavior/Infidelity
Promiscuity, child sexual abuse, rape and sexual acting out of all sorts.

Lack of Realistic Life Plan/Parasitic Lifestyle
Tends to move around a lot or makes all encompassing promises for the future, poor work ethic but exploits others effectively.

Criminal or Entrepreneurial Versatility
Changes their image as needed to avoid prosecution. Changes life story readily.
Other Related Qualities:

Contemptuous of those who seek to understand them
Does not perceive that anything is wrong with them
Authoritarian
Secretive
Paranoid
Only rarely in difficulty with the law, but seeks out situations where their tyrannical behavior will be tolerated, condoned, or admired
Conventional appearance
Goal of enslavement of their victim(s)
Exercises despotic control over every aspect of the victim's life
Has an emotional need to justify their crimes and therefore needs their victim's affirmation (respect, gratitude and love)
Ultimate goal is the creation of a willing victim
Incapable of real human attachment to another
Unable to feel remorse or guilt
Extreme narcissism and grandiose
May state readily that their goal is to rule the world
