Yesterday I tried to initialize HDD WD20EARS 2 Tb. It was recognized by BIOS and Windows but formating was not finished. Windows displayed a message that it cannot accomplish formatting without any indication to the cause of the problem. Repeating attempts to format HDD with Windows tools failed and I went to look around the net for for the solution and after some reding here and there found that my problem can be solved with hDD low level format tool. So I downloaded and started it to find myself in a "trap". After two hours of work HDD LLT displayed a message "Format error occured at offset ..." repeating it again and again with different offset coordinates.
It' still working 26 hours later. I' am afraid that stopping it would destroy disk and need a professional advice on two isues.
1) Can I stop HDD LLT when it works?
2) How long it usualy take to zero-fill 2Tb?

If its a new drive return it. I have heard this happen a few times already (on brand new drives).

1- You can stop it - the disk might be destroyed already.
2 - 6-10 hours.

Try Western Digital's Data Lifeguard Diagnostics:

You may need the diagnostic report in order to qualify for a warranty replacement.
