I've heard of recoveries to repair platters but I honestly don't think it's true. The replacement of heads/actuator arm is hard enough in it's own right. Practice that first and get back to us when you finally do it.

Putting it in a freezer won't help either. I dare say the heads crashed and because you p1ssed around with it so much it eventually failed to the point that you have now. Best to just leave it to the experts if you truly need the data which by the sounds of things you don't. I'd love to see if anyone could actually recover this drive anyhow.

I'm amazed that the people here have been so patient with you to be honest, you are referring to their livelihood. What makes you think people are willing to give that up? They would not be telling you, they would be telling the world and there is already enough cowboys out there already.

If you really want to learn then be prepared to spend a lot of money on tools and a lot of time failing because that's how everyone else here has learned...trust me it's a hard frustrating road to travel. Some days I just want to pull my hair out and scream. There are only so many times you can fail at a task before you lose all hope/morale.

As for the "eBay" tools you spoke of, they are made by Salvation Data and can be very handy for certain jobs, especially the dock station. The platter removal tools are useful for a small amount of jobs...well those kind anyway. Yes they are expensive however who has the time to engineer and make these themselves. The time alone would not be worth the hours lost when you could be performing data recovery and earning money. The DDI could be classed as over priced by someone who has no knowledge of it's true ability...it pays for itself on a regular basis. As do most DR tools.

Scott Moulton's book (which I believe you are referring to) was designed for in class training, not for noobs to try and recover data from a disk that is clearly screwed.

There is only so much you can learn on the internet, if you are truly passionate then fork out the cash to go see Scott in the US and take his class. You'll be exposed to stuff that will drain your brain to a point of exhaustion. Scott can talk with out stopping more than any person on this earth....good luck!

well, after waiting and many unanswered emails, i was told they can recover it with an above 50% chance. he wants payment of $800 before he starts work.

is it fair for him to charge me $800 before he even touches it?

This can be true - the unique factor is what was done by you. Your case is not an impossible one, the only limit is $$$ and the scratched part is off limits for sure.
