I've been trying to recover files from this laptop hdd a girl gave me. This hdd for some reason is mercilessly slow I tried to hook it up to my desktop via sata cables and enter into the hard drive via unbuntu which worked at first. unfortunately there was a large cluster of pictures that I was trying to transfer but the computer crashed. When I loaded back into unbuntu I noticed that the files were gone. So now I'm trying to recover these lost files from the hard drive but every method I use fails simply because it takes too much time for the hard drive to be processed through and the computer crashes. Do you guys have any ideas and software or methods I could use to gain access to these pictures.

TLSS: trying to recover files from a seriously corrupt hdd. hdd slows my computer to a crawl.

Wrong move. You never work on a failing drive. First use DDrescue and clone it to another HDD. If this fails you need a professional cloning tools such as DDI, Atola, DE or DC. Pick one they are not cheapt and I think a DR company can do this one for a lot less than buying a professional cloning tool. But anyway mount this on your MB I know it is laptop but you can get stuff to do this one with and get another HDD and use DDRescue and clone to this one. Hope this helps but do not keep working on this the way you are it will fail for sure.
