Is it physically possible to desolder those tiny Chips with even tinier legs from HDD PCBs ? I have read some comments about switching the firmware, and looking at those chips makes me wonder about the possibility.

Are there easier desolder tools ? Forget the soldering iron !

Try searching hot air desoldering station, also you want one that you are able to control the temperature

Or outsource those procedures to a pro who does SMD work until you are proficient yourself.

Low in both Price and quality , but does the job.

But a fine tip soldering iron(30/40w) of good quality is a must .

DON'T BUY CRAP TOOLS. You won't find spares , no support and you'll regret it at first disastered attempt, especially if you are a novice! I started with pro tools and I thank every bit of that decision, even if it took time to spare the money and/or mortgage. I had with them all the necessary support.

Hello Matiw,

If you want a equipment to solder and desolder ROM chips you don“t need expensive tools. Otherwise you need to practice a lot because of the temperatures to avoid burning the chips.

YIHUA 892D+

You can look at it on ebay for exemple. Is an easy tool and will work for your needs.
