i have this seagate 5400.4 drive .

connected the drive to ddi4 , and when powered on , it takes a long time until it identify and gets ready "~35 secs".
testing the source media " as no head map available for this model " will result in a PASS " all green" but each block will take ~ 45 secs to finish testing .

trying to image the mfts is too too slow , using several imaging passes .

i am thinking it's heads defect . :?

any ideas ?

thank you

sector latency while imaging is ~1050 ms

So as a 'pro' why don't you tell us the results of your tests which lead you to this conclusion. Otherwise any opinion expressed by any person here is just a guess!

the problem seems to be that you are trying to image the disk without properly identifying the problem. If it was heads defect then media would likely spin down. Could be a single failed head or failing head, but it sounds like you have read problems regardless of which head you read.

Terminal output could give a much better idea of the problem, but going straight for recovery without knowing the problem is not good. Assuming the problem is the heads and you pursue an image attempt you could cause irreversible damage. Assuming the problem isnt heads and you change them, this could cause irreversible damage.

Start with terminal, what does it show?

This is pending problem, a firmware issue. Far from head related like you suggested which stresses the importance of a good diagnostic.

You can solve easiest with PC3000 and using Loader. Other option is to rewrite table with a specific terminal command but this can potentially make things worse also.

Do you have PC3000 for this?
