Hi,

I have a WD 1 TB My Passport drive. Recently, it stopped working. When i plug-in the cable to the computer, the system does not display any of the partitions of my WD portable drive. My system hangs when i try to open up 'Disk Management' under 'Computer Management' window. My desktop is Win7. As soon as i plug-out my WD drive, 'Disk Management' opens up and pops the following message: "You need to format the disk in drive F: before you can use it". I faced this same issue approx. 1 month earlier too but when i tried connecting the WD to another desktop, it worked. This time, it didn't. :(

My drive has never felt any jerk ever. I also tried my drive on my friend's system but faced the same issue. My drive is still under warranty.

Any suggestion?

Thanks.

There is no question in your message, and it is unclear the main goal . If you need working drive and this one is under warrantly, just send it to RMA , what the problem? Hope you did backup like many other clever users ?

Sorry for being unclear. Isn't there any way to recover the data? If not, at least, is there any way i can format it somehow and then send for RMA? I took partial backup. :(

Try downloading R-Studio and scan the drive you should be able to recover if the drive is indeed in ok shape.

Thanks for the suggestion but the software did not work. It used to hang. I also tried using other software such as Recuva but to no avail. :( Finally, i applied for RMA since my drive was under warranty. I will be receiving a new drive in a day or two.

When i called up the WD technical cell and asked what could be the possible reason behind failure, he told me the following reasons:
1) Creating multiple partitions
2) Accidentally dropping it
3) Disconnecting the drive from a computer/laptop improperly

I can understand the last two reasons but i am not sure about the first one. Can creating multiple partitions be a reason behind such failures? What other reasons can lead to such failures?
