I have a 2,5'' 500 gb samsung hm500li hard drive what has died

It doesn't spin and make a repetitive sound clic-clic during some seconds after that it turns off.

In case PCB is fried, I've found some sellers that sell exactly the same model as mine.

My question is: is it needed a firmware transfer or chip swap for my model?

In other words would my disk run if I swap one pcb for another.

99% won't be PCB, almost certainly heads are bad and/media damage.

Tu problema como te han comentado no es relativo a la PCB
Como te han dicho, el problema es relativo a las cabezas o a los platos.
Si son las cabezas necesitas sustituirlas. No es un trabajo que puedas hacer sin las herramientas adecuadas, te puede salir por 500 - 650 eur aprox En caso de fallo de los platos no es posible la recuperacion de datos

It sounds like stiction to me (heads stuck to platters). There are some DIY tricks, but there is an element of risk.

If you're absolutely certain it isn't spinning, might be just stuck heads.

But in any event you'll almost certainly need to replace them. PCB isn't your issue.

A few data recovery companies had anticipated me that the most probable, since the motor is not spinning, is a failure of the electronics that controls it. They also tell me this disc hasn't protection circuits.
Another possibility is a broken motor but they said it is so improbable. However they said me that when the drive stops usually it makes some physical damage.

Besides all the problem happened when I change the hard disk from a lacie external box (with a broken cable) to a poor quality one (chinese). Before the change it worked perfectly by sata, so the fault is 100% of the enclosure. Also it has not suffered any crash.

Moreover the clic I mentioned before is not like the videos that I've found online with disc with broken heads.

Actually your comments get me more confused about the problem. :s

The clicking suggests that the PCB is trying to kickstart the motor, in which case the PCB is most probably OK.

Some port powered external drives need more current during startup than the USB port is able to provide. If this is your problem, then try a USB Y-cable. This will pick up power from two USB ports.

I tried using sata and powing it from a power supply. And nothing...

seguro que tu problema no es de la placa PCB, el problema esta puede ser "heads stickion" en el mejor de los casos, o "bad heads", o "media damage"

en caso de "heads stickion" la solución puede ser sencilla pero necesitas cámara limpia y otras herramientas
en caso de "bad heads" es necesario cambiar piezas y es necesaria también la cámara limpia u otras herramientas.
en caso de "media damage" en este caso posiblemente no se pueda recuperar o seria extremadamente caro (posiblemente mas de 10.000 eur)

Hello everyone, I have the same issue with the same drive, any solutions was found? I know that the drive is out of date, however I'm interested in data recovery from the disk. I would be appreciated for any help.
