This is probably old and obvious news, but just had to swap heads on a USB MQ01UBD100. The SATA PCB from the MQ01ABD100 head donor seemed a good match for SATA conversion.

USB PCB: G003250A

SATA PCB: G003138A

MCU: 88i9317-RAI2

Conversion worked fine.

That's a coincidence Nick, just done one today!!

1tb USB clicking, new heads and really struggling via USB.

SATA conversion moving IC602 worked fine, cloning now (bit patchy but better than nothing!)

Do you know how?
Someone can show me a shematic where to solder sata connector on this usb pcb ?

I meant I used a SATA board, moving IC602 from the USB board to it.

IC602 seem to not be the rom on my pcb.
ROM on this pcb should be IC606 (Winbond 25X20BL)

Are you sure? Have you tried it?

IC606 it's a flash rom, but you are also right, IC602 it's another flash ROM
http://www.alldatasheet.net/view.jsp?Searchword=25X20BL
http://www.macronix.com/Lists/DataSheet ... 20v1.5.pdf

IC602 code is:
Macronix MX25V4006EZNI

IC606 code is:
Winbond 25X20BL

So do you think that it's enough to swap IC602 or do i need to swap also IC606 ?

As I told you, I just moved IC602 and it worked for me :-)

@michael chiklis, if you compare your PCB against the SATA version, then the "ROM" (IC602) and SATA Tx/Rx locations become obvious.

http://ep.yimg.com/ay/yhst-144375849714 ... 5271-7.gif

IC606 is associated with the bridge IC.

In the absence of a comparison PCB, you can determine the functions of the ROM chips by using a multimeter to trace their data pins back to the MCU and bridge ICs.

As for the SATA Tx/Rx pairs, the general rule is to locate two thin, parallel, capacitively coupled pairs of traces running between the MCU and the bridge, remove the capacitors, and then tap into the signal pairs on the MCU side. The signal order should match the order at the SATA data connector, either directly or in reverse.

I converted native usb pcb to sata as you suggested me, now hdd is detect in MRT.
What is strange is that sometimes it does not show the correct capacity and seems to be locked by password, if i close and reopen MRT sometimes is detected with 0 bytes in size and not locked with password.

I closed and opened MRT few times without changing any paramenter until it shown me this:

Toshiba MQ01UBD100 - pic2.JPG

it changes continuously at random, very unstable...

Maybe PCB is faulty, should i try changing directly pcb with a sata donor pcb?

Hi, case SOLVED!
I changed native usb pcb with sata donor G003138A and i swapped the ROM from patient to donor.
I cloned drive via MRT D.E. There were about 70 bad sectors on first 6.000.000 LBAs but data are all recovered.
Thank you all!

P.S.
Cloning was pretty slow, customer did open the drive because he thought the issue was inside.
Bad move, if he didn't open the drive, maybe it wouldn't be necessary to clone it because he could use it directly as sata drive, and the price would be lower.

I would have thought that comparing the motor controllers would have been far more important than comparing the flash chips.

Hi,

I have a MQ01UBD100 but the USB broke and the pins are messed up. I have a MQ01ABD100 HDD and tried the Logic Board head from this hard drive which is SATA based. IT tries to read but nothing happens. Is there something else that could cause it not to work? I see it has worked for everyone. I dont want to spend the money on getting another MQ01UBD100 or MQ01UBD100 Logic board as they are quite pricey. Do you think my HDD is just dead?

You need to transfer the flash memory IC, or its contents, from patient to donor.

Some PCB suppliers, eg hdd-parts.com, will include the transfer at no extra cost.
