Hello,

I'm getting mad... I am trying to find a donor for a WD HDD I have here. The HDD is without label, so I have no info about it, only PCB and serial number. I attach some photos of it. HDD needs new heads.

PCB is 2060-701499-000 rev A and S/N is WXH0A9975498

PC3000 says that PCB is Denali family, and head map is 0,1,2,3. So I think it's a WD3200BEVT-XXZCTX.

I tried 3 different donors:

1)
WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0
WXE308DW9573
HHCVJHBB
02 APR 2008
Thailand
2060-701499-000

2)
WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0
WXEY08TT4122
HHNTJHB
11 JAN 2009
Malaysia
2060-701499-000

3)
WD3200BEVT-22ZCT0
WXL0E89C0022
DBNTJHBB
23 SEP 2009
Thailand
2060-701499-000

The drive always clicks with all these heads. The heads returned to donors work well.

Can you help me to find a right donor for this HDD or could you tell me where I am wrong in searching for donors?

Thanks!
Simone

It should be read the ROM on HW programmer
or
separate PCB, WD utility.

1. Why is the label missing?
2. What was done before you got the drive?
3. As mentioned, can you be sure that this is the client original PCB?

It very likely is fatal damage, either from the original issue or as a direct result of someone else screwing around with the drive. I sure hope that your client is paying you for each donor and the time spent with the shotgun approach.

WD2500BMVS-11F9S0 & WD2500BEVS-60UST0 for example, has the same head map and uses the same PCB

1) The label is missing because client removed it to open the drive :(
2) Client says he opened the drive and then closed it
3) So maybe this is not original PCB? I had this doubt... now I ask client... I'll let you know.

I hate when people try to DIY and then bring it in for professional service after them mess it up more. They take an otherwise simple problem and create a multifaceted data recovery nightmare. And what gets me the most is the lying. I've customers lie to my face and swear it's the original PCB and was never removed when the ROM is clearly from an entirely different model. Sometimes it's not even the right PCB number at all.

FWIW, there are Year/Week (YWW or YYWW) date codes on each of the ICs.

If you are incapable of understanding them, just upload a photo of the PCB.

Those are tricky when it comes to heads and other areas in terms of compatibility. Tomset's advice is good stuff.

so... we can assume
1) its the native PCB
2) the drive was probably manufactured around sep oct 2009
the question is in what country

have you tried heads from HDD no. 3 + the PCB from no. 3 ? i.e. using the heads + PCB from donor
(maybe the PCB is native but the ROM isn't)

BTW HDD no. 2 that you have tried
