Hi all

I am new here, and if have spent hours searching the internet for answers but each case seems different when it comes to external hard drives.

I dropped the above drive about 20cm onto a hard floor a few days ago. When I plugged it back in, it was working, so thought nothing of it. The next day it doesn't show up in my computer.

The drive shows up in windows 7 and vista device manager (although windows 7 says "needs troubleshooting").

It also shows up in windows disk management but as 930 (ish) gb unallocated and unitilitiazed. The LED on the drive lights up. There are no clicking sounds, although it may be making a little more vibration than normal (not sure as I wasn't in the habit of checking the vibration when it was working!).

I have looked at the circuit board and some of the contacts seem a little bit oxidised but not severely so i doubt that this is the issue.

I have tried recuva and disk drill to recover the data with no files found.

I also tired acronis disk management 12 (trial). This looked a little more promising - it listed the drive as about 135gb partition healthy, primary MBR, but not formatted. The remaining 700 or so gb was showing unallocated which I'd expect as I knew roughly how much data was on the drive. I also checked the "edit volume" option and all of the data blocks showed "00" which is in contrast to my internal hard drive which shows the data.

The drive has years of teaching resources and lesson plans etc on (yes I know I was silly not to back it up) so would really need this data back even if it involved paying several hundred for physical data recovery.

Just wondered if anyone had any advice before I send it off to the professionals. I really don't see how my drive could contain literally no data.

Thanks in advance

Kyle

Stop any DIY (do it yourself) activity with this drive - you definitely will destroy your data.
Dont turn that drive on again - it will make problems worse.

I urg you to contact pcimage (forum member here) he is data recovery pro and from UK.
Secondly he is a WD specialist.
