Can I buy a new drive and switch disks in order to recover the data? My problem is that my external SSD is not detected at all (I guess it must be a card/software problem)

First of all. Before you make any further steps it is to determine how important the data is to you. There are many DIY steps that could do harm to your hard drive.



The ST1000LM024 is a common hard drive. (spinning platters).... I'm not sure what you mean by external SSD. An SSD is a data storing device without any mechanical parts. (ssd = solid (not spinning state disk

Maybe you have an external USB-Harddrive and opened it and found the ST1000LM024 inside? An then what have you done then?

In the end I think it could have been an oversurge... some fuses/diodes that could be defective... but thats only a guess...

Maybe you could give more information what exactly you have done?

Hi Benjamin, thanks for your prompt reply.
First, the data I'm trying to recover is not critical, therefore I figure I would risk trying to recover it and at the same time learn something in the process.

Regarding what I've done with my backup HDD, I realize I did not explain myself right and wrote some misleading information, so I'll try again:
I have a dead (not recognized at all in 3 different laptops with 2 different USB cables) Seagate Backup Plus 1 TB Hard Drive. After looking around I found a couple of DIY videos for diagnosing and repairing and ultimately decided to tear it appart. Inside I found a Samsung Spinpoint Momentus HDD model ST1000LM024. I went further and opened up the HDD case trying to verify if there was a stuck head and found out they were OK. After many unsuccessful tests, my conclusion is that the problem is the PCB board (or . At this point, I am in the market for a new external HDD backup drive and found some combos that offer annual cloud storage when buying a physical unit, so i figured I'd buy a similar unit and try to switch the disk in order to recover the data from my present drive. I realize I might end up with two defective drives but am wiling to take the risk.
I hope this clears a bit my original posting and again, thanks for yr help.

Instead of watching stupid DIY-videos you should have read something useful, e.g.:

This tells you why you should not open a drive outside a clean room: "In modern drives, the flying height is normally about 3 nanometers. Thus, the head can collide with even an obstruction as thin as a fingerprint or a particle of smoke."

A platter swap is not a "risk", it will lead to 100% data loss for sure. First step is proper diagnose: What happened to the drive, did it spin in the first stage? Did you power it on opened?
