...against conformance to its firmware?

in particular I am interested about possibility of interchanging controllers within SAMSUNG P80 series (SP1614N [IDE] <---> HD120IJ, HD080HJ [SATA]).

Hello,

in fact it is difficult to interchange PCBs within one family, since there are many versions of FW. I haven't seen that HD120IJ yet, however it is almost sure U cannot just replace the PCB and get the drive work.
