since im new here, im gonna say hi!. im in a desperate situation and need help. i got thosiba MQ01ABD100 1tb external hard drive. so here's the story...

yesterday it was fine, nothing weird happen. so i decided to defrag my system hard drive that day(in my laptop its local disk c:) when the external hard drive is plugged in . then, i go to ccleaner to wipe free space to free up some space on my system hard drive partition, condition of the external hard drive is still plugged in. so i go to sleep cause wipe free space from ccleaner takes a few hours. after its done, im turning my laptop off, unplugged my external hard drive and go to sleep until today, this day, like usual i turned on my laptop and plug my external hard drive, and voila! its not detected. the behavior when i plug it in is weird, my laptop do detect and play sound there is a device being plugged (in this case, my external hard drive), but its not showing a notification or anything, the led indicator lights up for a few seconds (not blinking or anything, just lights up) and after a few seconds the indicator went off. so i tried the disk management, and my external hard drive is not detected. and in device manager i got the warning icon on the usb mass storage device. and i feel that the hard drive doesnt spin or vibrating or anything, but its keep gaining heat, its getting warmer if i keep it plugged in for a 10 - 15 minutes.

and now i dont know what to do, ive googled everywhere, ive met some posts that seems like they got problems like i did, i follow the steps and still nothing. i describe the whole thing because im just curious is this a negative effect causes from the ccleaner wipe free space when an external hard drive plugged in or else? any positive responses is appreciated, thank you.

First off, that model is of an internal HDD. Have you tried just connecting it to a computer using the SATA port rather than over USB? Also are there any strange noises such as clicking coming from the drive? Is it spinning?

yeah, i tried to replace my current laptop hard drive with my external hard drive (i swap it), i check it with live ubuntu via usb stick. when i tried to install ubuntu to it, it said that the hard drive is not exist. same things happen with windows installer via usb stick, the hard drive is not detected. the external hard drive not vibrating, so guess its not spinning. it doesnt make any weird noises at all. after a few minutes plugged in, sometimes the indicator lamp on, not blinking or anything, just lights up,after 2-5 minutes it went off again with blinking 3-5 times before it totally off. is it missing some boot or swap files because ccleaner wipe free space?

Maybe I'm missing something here.... I thought you were trying to recover the data from the drive, yet you say you tried to install ubuntu to it??? why would you do that?

I hope you understand that it is a VERY bad idea in general to write data to a drive that you want to recover data from, right?

Data-Medic, I'm wondering if ccleaner somehow wiped Track Zero, is that possible?
If memory serves me, any software-improper write on boot sector, FAT, Directory, or elsewhere on Track Zero can render a HD inoperable, or, is my memory faulty?
