The drive had water spilt on it while in use and not spinning anymore.

It is annoying but not fatal as no real important data on it but it would be nice if I could get it spinning again to get everything of it.
If for instance it is a matter of a blown fuse maybe I can solve it? Problem is I cannot find a fuse on the pcb. I find 5 volt at different places on the pcb so I think the 5v supply is OK but there seems to be no 12v anywhere else then on the power connector.

Found a post about similar drive (according to the picture it is the same pcb) and checked everything that was suggested there:
- TVS diodes seem ok.
- 0.1 ohm resistors seem ok.
- checked Vcore: 0.47 volt
- checked Vio: 2.58 volt
- checked -5V: 0 volt

I think the voltages are not ok.
The pictures are from the other post but pcb looks the same.

Anybody who can tell me if I overlook a fuse and if so where? Or of course any other suggestions?

Thanks Misja

I'd be concerned about possible ingress of water inside the HDA. Otherwise, if you can be certain that the water damage is confined to the PCB, then perhaps the best solution would be a replacement PCB and "ROM" transfer. The ROM is the 8-pin chip marked "25FU206".

PCB suppliers such as hdd-parts.com will include a firmware transfer in the price, usually US$50 or less.

BTW, you should find +12V across one or more capacitors adjacent to the motor controller IC.

Hi fzabkar,

thanks for your info.
Although I do not think water got into the HDA, replacing the pcb is too big a job for this 640GB disk.
There are no suppliers of replacement pcb's in the area and there is of course no guaranty that it will save the data. Also the cost will be close to cost of a new drive.
The data on the drive is not really important although it is annoying to lose it.

apart from the +5V none of the voltages on the PCB are right so i guess there is no simple repair.

There should be +12V across a capacitor near the motor controller. If so, then this would suggest that the motor controller is dead. Otherwise I would try to find out why 12V is not making it to this chip.

Fzabkar thanks again for your info.
I can not find 12V anywhere else then on the TVS diode and the capacitors near its input. That is why i felt that maybe a fuse could be broken but I do not see a fuse.
Can you tell me what is the motor controller so I can make sure there is no 12V there?
Is there somewhere a schematic of what the 12V circuit roughly could be? At the moment I have no idea what to look for.
