Hello everyone ,

Case No 1

Donor :

MDL : WD2500BEVT-22ZCT0
DCM :HHCTJHNB
Date Code : 18 March 2009
Country : Thailand
Family : Denali
HM :1,2,3 [ Total Heads Present : 0,1,2,3 ] So 3 out of 4 Are Active

Patient :

MDL : WD2500BEVT-22ZCT0
DCM :HHNTJHN
Date Code:18 March 2009
Country :Malasyia
Family :Denali
HM :0,2,3 [ Total Heads Present ; 0,2,3 ] So 3 Out Of 3 Active

What Was Done : Heads Were Swapped And Then Headmap Was Edited So That Max Heads Were 4 And 3 Were Active [ Is This The Right Procedure If donor Has More Heads Then Patient ] .Heads No 0,2,3 Were Already Selected By Default .The Drive Started And Started Clicking .Heads Changed Back To Donor and Donor Clicking Too .The Patient Had Head 0 Bend Before Head Swap ,Could This Have Made The Platter Bad For Head 0 .Also Is It Wise To Attempt Head Swap To a Drive With Bend Heads .Filter Was Clean IMHO .

PS : Bad Day Today Very Upset :(

if you are using patient ROM there should be no need to change head map IMO.

bent head is different story.

I would inspect both platters before HSA swap. Especially in a case with bent HGA, saves a lot of heads. Also to judge if a partial is the way to go, I want to know surface condition to get the best result.

Sir ,
The Donor Had 4 Heads But When i Was Seeing Headmap in ROM Via PC3K it Said Max Heads 3 and of those 3 used ,so i increased The Total Head Count To 4 .Did i Do Something Wrong ? .

Hello Digisupport ,

This Was a 2 Platter Drive .So We Can Surely Inspect Top Platter [ How does One inspect Other Platters ] . when You Say Partial You Mean Selective Head Cloning [ But Drive Has To Initialise Before That and system area heads need to be working ] . In My Case Head No 0 was present in patient and bent all the way to head no 2 [ head no 1 was physically not present ] ,When The Drive Was Not Opened Everyone including me ran the drive [ This Might Have Made The Platters Scratchy ] . In This Case If It Was You How would you Have approached the case

Hi Amarbir,

Yes i know this is a 2 platter drive, I still inspect all surfaces on Denalis plus many other WD models :)
Did 8 succes full head swaps on this model last month - I eat them for breakfast.

Amarbir, I would approach this case in the following order.
If client failure or drive behavior description point in direction of a physical damage I always open a drive, If I’m in doubt – I open. I’m not here to make further damage and risk client data.
By seeing HSA conditions like you describe I would (on this model) inspect all surfaces, and in your case it would probably have shown some damage on 0 but still one system head to get the drive running (partially of course) You write patient HM is 0,2,3 donor is 1,2,3 so you can’t know if donor h0 is ok.

Wow ,
Excellent Observation [ How Can i Be Sure Head 0 Is OK and Functional ] ,Assuming It Was Not But Head 2 Matches And Hence Copy 1 Of SA Should Be In That On Patient [ Hence It Should Have started ] . My Guess is Head 0 And Head 2 Were Having Platter Damage .Would a Dental Mirror With Light Be OK for Seeing Platter Damage On Other surfaces Other then Top Surface ? .

I think it sometimes matters, and sometimes it doesn't. If the preamp vendor and version is the same, then you don't need to worry about it (assuming you can check it). But, at times different countries will be stocked from different vendors so it might matter. It's one of those things I match whenever I can, but if I can't find one from the right country or it's three times the price I'll go for the other one.
