Hi all

I need a bit of help on this:
My Dell D630 motherboard packed up last week and now its completely dead. HDD has got a user password set which I obviously know but I cannot get in entered from any PC I have. Tried desktop (award bios) - no luck, tried lenovo laptop (different bios) - no luck again. D630 had phoenix bios as far as I remember but I cannot get hold of any d630 within the next week or so. I need to get my files pretty sharpish. Could you please help. Thank you!

Hi Spildit

Thank you for your help!

Tried with TTL adaptor ( my old max 232 for serial) - zoc gives the following error:

COMMUNICATION PROBLEM.SCRIPT STOP

Double/Triple checked settings and connections but still no luck.

Will try the second method tomorrow although could not find Stcom...

Again Thank you for your help.

Kind Regards

Try with hyperterminal and see if the drive provides any log at all when powered up.
Most likely you have something not correctly connected.
Test by changing tx/rx.
Check to see if you have power on the ttl adaptor and drive.

Tried Hyper terminal - no luck
Double checked all the contacts - all sound
Power to HDD -all ok
Swaped PCs - used my old desktop with win98 - no luck

it looks like the TTL is causing this issue - when checking the voltage it gives me 4.2 and 3.1 respectively. Could that be a case?

If yes, then I need to get another TTL...

Is the data on the drive worth contacting Sean at pcimage.co.uk?

Test the adapter by looping the Tx and Rx outputs. Every key should then be echoed in HyperTerminal.

Alternatively, convert your password to keyboard scan codes and submit it to your drive as a 32-byte file using Victoria or the tool of your choice. Pad the file with zero bytes (0x00).

http://www.users.on.net/~fzabkar/MSKeyLog.TXT

For example, the "make" code for the "A" key is 1E in hexadecimal.

Thank you for your help - especially Spildit. It is unlocked. This hdd was a bit unusual -It was the matter of sequence and timing when connecting etc.. and few tries. TTL adaptor was ok (although it is old) - checked on other seagate hdds.

Kind Regards
